Life 2008

People start their lives in a rectangular cradle the moment they are born. They live their entire life in a rectangular house, rectangular bed and rectangular office to wrap up their life in a rectangular coffin when the dusk of life gets dark. That¡¯s right. It wouldn¡¯t be so wrong to say our lives start with rectangle and end with rectangle.

The painter named Rimhyo(53) making us feel the delicate flavor just like the soybean paste of Korea puts such lives of ours into small rectangle and large rectangle shapes to be put into a gigantic rectangle in a form of square. The ¡®life¡¯ drawn on a large sized canvas of 10.4m in width and 2.8m in length shows the rotating process of nature that becomes created and extinct according to seasons with emptying and filling.

The artist has been thinking about what being ¡®Korean like¡¯ is until now. That is because one must not be chauvinistic for the something Korean to become a global one and accompanied by universality that can be sympathized by people of the world. Rimhyo has been strictly looking for Korean style from a material called Hanji to myth and materials called apricot•pine tree•pavillion.

As he kept on digging into the Korean culture, images such as slowness, emptying, fermentation and ripening came to his head. Because he couldn¡¯t be satisfied just with using Hanji in his work, he decided to create a hand-made Hanji. He created his own unique paper texture by weaving Hanji with Dak paper, beating with fulling block and soaking or absorbing dyes on Hanji.

The time it takes for him to complete Hanji is normally about 8 months. It takes longer to prepare materials than drawing his work. For this reason, it wouldn¡¯t be too much to say that his work of making Hanji is the process to complete most of his work.

Rimhyo has a command of symbolic figures in the past or present. Not merely a symbol, but the desires that lay at the bottom of human awareness and their expressed styles are properly appeared on the picture. He shows the apricot, moon, pine tree, lotus pavilion and peach, etc as abstract and simplified rectangles while giving birth to the work where traditional flexibility is alive using Indian ink, coloring and lacquer.

The artist says that ¡°the ultimate purpose of nature, time, creation and coexistence shown in my work can be compressed as absence of ego. The very boundary to cross to reach the ultimate absence of ego is the emptiness. That is the time of emptying and filling¡±.

According to him, the emptying is the time to go toward filling and filling is the time to go toward emptying. He makes us realize through his work a truth which is simple but never easy that one must empty to fill and fill to empty. Perhaps that is the reason that the recently exhibited work has the criticism that the moderate beauty that could be called a simple but graceful and characteristic of Korean beauty stands out.

In the recent exhibition, the crude symbolic shapes have been added to simplified images covered with Oriental awareness of beauty so that about 40 refined pieces of work added with modern sense will be released. They¡¯re the works that give off Korean-like scent such as scattering leaves, pine trees and pavilion.
